The young Venezuelan Rufo Chacón, who lost both eyes when he was 16 years old as a result of pellet shots by the police of his country, has received in Barcelona, two ocular prostheses equipped with 3D technology and artificial intelligence that will give it autonomy, although for the moment it will not recover its vision.
The intervention of the young man, led by Dr. Miguel Salinas, has been financed by the Venezuelan Frigilux Foundation, who raised the money for Rufo Chacón after losing his eyes in a demonstration due to the gas shortage in the state of Táchina.
Salinas has told TV3 that the prostheses, which simulate the movement of natural eyes, will allow the young man to regain quality of life.
Sources from the company Ocular Lab, in which the operation was carried out, have indicated to EFE that the difficulty of this operation has consisted in fixing the prostheses in the eye sockets.
The prostheses have a system connected to a small device attached to the temple of a spectacle, and together, translate the images they capture into a voice message.
Rufo Chacón’s mother, who became popular in Venezuela when she applied for a passport to accompany her son abroad, posted a message this week on Instagram with the photo of her son, in which she affirms that the young man has received “the blessing of the most advanced technology that the city offers so far to improve quality of life and independence “.
“Today my son is a living an example of a possible Venezuela, which despite mistreatment and injustice rises up and struggles to move forward.
